I was remembering our Kauai vacation last year while painting this Bird of Paradise blossom 3 days ago.
My husband and I had such a wonderful time on the beautiful Hawaiian island! We came home with many great memories and reference photos.

Small flower and bird studies are a wonderful way for me to relax and meditate. I usually work from my own photographs. This one was taken during the early summer in out beautiful Xeric garden. The roses bloomed in gorgeous shades of yellow, orange and red, and they are relatively drought tolerant. This dry summer everything has been needing a little extra water, of course.

Before starting larger paintings, and sometimes just to loosen up, I like to do small color studies of subjects. Going through my photos from last fall, I found this little Aspen Grove with the unusual bright orange hues in the trees. The hot temperatures of the last 2 months make me look forward to the crisp, cool Autumn days.

I have been busy with many projects, a large commission of a bird and sunflower painting, among others.
This detail shows one of the juvenile Gold finches, the colors in his plumage not quite developed enough to tell if it is a male or female.
