"Blue Columbine #3" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on archival board, 5" x 7", $125.-
Blue Columbine #2
Oil on archival board, 5" x 7", $125.-
Blue Columbine #1
Oil on archival board, 6" x 6", $125.-
I just finished the third little painting in my Blue Columbine series, at the top. I like to paint in a series and sometimes arrange the paintings so that they relate to each other. It gives me a chance to explore the subjects a little bit closer and, suddenly, there is a story. This is the story of a wonderful July weekend in Grand County, Colorado. The wildflowers were especially abundant after all the spring rains.

"Chickadee and Quince" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on archival board, 6" x 6", $125.-
I painted this little chickadee this weekend while working at our gallery, the Art Center of Estes Park. It is always fun to work on a small painting while staffing the gallery. Patrons love to see art in progress, and to learn about the process.

"Apple A Day" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on archival board, 5" x 5", $75.-
Turning to fruits and vegetables for small studies about light and color. I do like to exaggerate color in some of these paintings, especially in the background, see how far I can push it.

Oil on gallery wrapped canvas, 10" x 10", Painting continues around the 2" deep edges, $275.-
During this long stretch of very hot days, I am thinking Aspens. I look forward to the beautiful, crisp days of the Colorado Autumn. What a fantastic Autumn we had last year! I hope we'll see another one like that again this year.

"Now You See Me" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on linen panel, 8" x 8",$225.-, framed.
Still watching, photographing and painting the goldfinches during their annual visit and feast in our sunflowers. It is a beautiful and fascinating spectacle as the young goldfinches accompany the adults and gradually learn to feed themselves while swaying on top of the large flowers.

Young Gold Finch" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on archival board, 7" x 5", $125.-
One of the juvenile Goldfinches that are visiting our yard with their parents to feast on the sunflowers. I love to watch the fun as the little Goldfinches learn to balance on the flowers and feed themselves. I am fascinated with the delicate colors of their plumage, sometimes having to guess if they are male or female.

"NaPali Coast" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on linen panel, 8" x 8", $ 125.-, unframed.
What an amazing vacation we had in Kauai this spring! The landscape was breathtaking. The water was such an incredible blue-green! I hope that I will be able to remember it and do it justice in my paintings. This is a quick study of the NaPali coastline, done from one of the many reference photos we brought back from our trip.

"Kauai Rooster Quartet #2" by Astrid Paustian

Kauai Roosters #6,#7,#8,and #9, details, 12" x 12" each, to be mounted on a 30" x 30 canvas.
I have been working on a larger version of my Kauai Rooster Quartet for an upcoming exhibit. Photographing these paintings has been a challenge, so I decided to put them directly on my scanner, which left me with details.
Still having fun with the roosters we encountered during our vacation in Kauai earlier this year!

"American Goldfinch" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on archival board, 7" x 5", $125.-
The Goldfinches have returned to our yard for their annual feast on our red sunflowers.
I was lucky enough to get a photo of this little guy yesterday morning, and had to paint him right away. I do enjoy watching these beautiful birds as they perform their acrobatics, swaying on top of the heavy sunflower blossoms to extract the seeds. It takes the young goldfinches a few days to learn this skill, under loud protest, since it is so much easier to be fed by their parents.

"House Finch" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on archival board, 7" x 5", $95.-
This little guy was sitting in our Ash tree last week. One of many finches that inhabit our yard. The young finches have left their nests and they are learning (under loud protest, directed at their tired parents) to feed themselves. The first Goldfinches are arriving also, to feast on the Sunflowers.
