"Kauai Rooster #4" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on board, 5" x 5", $85.-
The 3rd Rooster painting done last week from the many rooster photos I brought back from our trip to Kauai three weeks ago. I am planning to do some larger paintings of them as well to emphasize their beautiful plumage.
At this time, however, I am preparing to paint the beautiful NaPali coastline of Kauai.
Other gorgeous subjects to paint are currently blooming in our garden. So much to paint!

"Kauai Rooster #3" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on board, 5" x 5", $85.-
Here in another one of the roosters I painted this week. I have always enjoyed painting chickens, and our trip to Kauai a few weeks ago provided me with many wonderful reference photos. The roosters, hens and chicks were everywhere and a very colorful sight. I was also impressed with the hens, devoted to their chicks and raising them under insane conditions, by the side of the road, on parking lots and golf courses.

"Kauai Rooster #2" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on board, 5" x 5", $85.-
I have been painting chickens this week. I took many photos of these beautiful birds during our recent vacation in Kauai. It was easy, because they were everywhere!
I will paint some larger versions of these roosters as well, on 12" x 12" canvas.

"Red Iris", watercolor by Astrid Paustian

The Iris are starting to bloom in our garden. They are some of my favorite flowers to paint. I especially like to observe and paint the way light filters through their beautiful petals.
This painting has been sold, but you can see many more of my paintings on my web site.

"Out on a Limb 1 and 2" by Astrid Paustian

Watercolor, 12" x 9", $225.-
Oil on canvas panel, 12" x 9", $325.-
My friend Tom Weeks, gifted photographer from Boulder, Colorado, generously allowed me to paint his new owl photo, taken last week. This young owl hatched in late March, and is looking out into the new world.
I tried both, an oil and a watercolor version, these past 2 days, fascinated by the expressive face in a "bundle of fluff".

"Bird of Paradise #2" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on panel, 6" x 6", $ 95.-
Another painting of this beautiful plant, found on Kauai during our recent vacation.
So many beautiful flowers and trees. So many new subjects to explore. And now, our local flowers are beginning to bloom in large numbers, Iris and Poppies among my favorite ones. So much to paint. What a wonderful season!

"Bird of Paradise" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on "Gatorbord", 5" x 5", $85.-
This is one of the tropical flower paintings I have been working on since we returned from beautiful Kauai last week. I am especially fond of the Bird of Paradise, with it's vibrant colors and dynamic lines. I am experimenting with oils and watercolors on different surfaces, and it is a lot of fun!

"Pink Poppy" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on Gessobord, 5" x 5", $ 85.-
While my brand new tropical Flower paintings are drying I am posting this poppy, done just prior to our vacation, 3 weeks ago.
I love painting on gessobord, a new surface for me. I like the way the white surface reflects light through the layers of color, which gives the oil paintings an almost transparent appearance. Paints take a little longer to dry on this new surface, but I think it is worth the wait.

"Kauai Rooster #1" by Astrid Paustian

Watercolor, 8" x 8", matted to 12" x 12", $ 75.-
My husband and I just returned from our 2 week vacation on Kauai. What an amazing place! Beautiful, lush, green landscapes, the breathtaking NaPali coastline, tropical flowers, beautiful marine life, and roosters and chickens everywhere! This is one of the little watercolors I did while on vacation. I don't often paint in watercolor anymore, but it was the most practical medium to bring on this trip. What a joy watercolor painting can be under more humid conditions!
I can't wait to paint more of my Kauai impressions during the next few weeks.

"Red Iris" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on canvas, 10" x 8", $325.-
This painting is currently on display at Brushstrokes Gallery in Denver, during the inaugural "Artists of Colorado" show. I am sorry to miss the reception tomorrow, May 6, 2011, because my husband and I are on a previously scheduled vacation in Kauai. I promise to bring home some paintings and many more ideas for paintings of the beautiful island, it's landscape, flowers, birds and the famous wild roosters.

"Don Juan" by Astrid Paustian

Pastel, 19"x 15", matted and framed to 24" x 20", $325.-
I painted this rooster about a year ago. It seemed a fitting subject to post while on vacation in Kauai with my husband. What a beautiful place! Of course we are enjoying the tropical vegetation and wonderful beaches, but there are roosters and chickens everywhere! They do take a toll on our sleep because the roosters crow at all hours.
They are a beautiful sight though, and I am having fun doing sketches and taking many photos.
Other favorite subjects to paint here are the ocean, sunsets, tropical flowers and birds.
While on vacation, I am doing many sketches and watercolor studies. Posting these is difficult and may have to wait until after our return.
