"Purple Crocus" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on canvas panel, 6" x 6", unframed, $ 85.-
Crocus are popping up from the winter soil throughout our garden. I am fascinated by their simple shapes and beautiful colors.
I am also having fun with the little 6" x 6 " canvas panels, great for painting small studies in oil.

"Chickadee #4" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on Canvas Panel, 6" x 6", $ 95.-, unframed.
This little guy was one of the many birds enjoying the Sunflower feast in our garden last August. I had a lot of fun with the background colors and took some liberties, as you can see.

"Woodpecker and Sunflower" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on Canvas, 12" x 9", $325.-
Our resident pair of Downy Woodpeckers did not want to be left out of the Sunflower feast in our garden this past August. A large flock of Goldfinches and many other bird species joined in the fun and provided some great photo and painting opportunities.
This painting was completed last week and is now one of many on display at the Art Center of Estes Park. My show, "Colorful Discoveries" runs through March 27th.

"Foothills Sunset" by Astrid Paustian

Pastel, 15" x 18.5", matted and framed to 20" x 24", $ 325.-
Another beautiful Colorado Sunset. Even in Winter, when the hills have turned brown, the skies offer a spectacular display of color. Pastel is a great medium to quickly put this impression on paper, layering color, without having to wait for paints to dry.

"Watercolor Study for Aspen Tapestry" by Astrid Paustian

Watercolor, 5.5" x 5.5", matted to 8" x 8", $45.-
It is always refreshing to switch mediums. I love to do small watercolor studies to try new subject matter. Since I love color so much, I often do a small color study in place of the recommended value study.

Pastel, 19" x 13", matted and framed to 24" x 18", $ 325.-
I bought this bouquet for a drawing session with a friend of mine. We had a lot of fun with the luscious pastel colors. Painting from life is always the best way to observe and study the subject closely.

"October Morning" by Astrid Paustian

Oil on canvas, 12" x 12", $375.-, framed.
Painted last October during our brilliant Colorado Autumn. The ponds at Pella Crossing in Longmont were sparkling with Fall colors. Reflections in water are a wonderful, creative challenge! This is one of the paintings featured at my upcoming show at the Art Center of Estes Park, opening next Friday.

Sunset over Golden by Astrid Paustian

Oil on Canvas Panel, 9" x 12 ", $ 175,-, unframed.
I do love painting skies. This image was painted from a photograph taken on the way home to Boulder from Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, in early September. I was just passing through Golden, Colorado, when the clouds turned a dramatic bright red and orange.

"Goldfinch and Sunflower by Astrid Paustian

Oil on gallery wrapped canvas, 8" x 8", $ 275.-
Painting continues around the 2" deep edges.
This week I am working on a series of bird paintings for my upcoming show at the Art Center of Estes Park. While yesterday's Magpie paintings are drying, I am posting this Goldfinch, photographed last year in a large flock of Goldfinches that enjoyed the Sunflowers in our garden.

"Cosmos" by Astrid Paustian

Pastel, 15" x 11.5", framed to 20" x 16", $325.-
"Where flowers bloom so does hope." Lady Bird Johnson. One of my very favorite quotes.
Sunlit flowers are a wonderful thing to think about and paint as we move from one snow storm into the next. Spring will be here soon, I think.

"Snow Birds" by Astrid Paustian

What!?Oil on panel, 6" x 6", unframed, $85.-
"Dark Eyed Junco #5", Oil on Panel, 8" x 10", unframed, $150.-
I've had fun again painting the "Snow Birds" underneath our bird feeders during these freezing cold Winter days. Even though they are all called "Dark Eyed Juncos", they come in many color variations. What impresses me most, is that these birds seem to thrive in cold temperatures.

.
Oil on panel, 9" x 12", $175.-, unframed.
My first Plein Air Painting of the year, done last Thursday, in balmy 50 degrees F.
It probably looks and feels different today, during this cruel cold spell.
Let's hope it will warm up soon!
